Location Scouting: Old Refugee Camp

This morning I went on a hunt for a derelict looking area/building for a shoot as part of my Uni project. I never imagined I'd find somewhere this derelict!

The area was used as an RAF camp for WWII.  Around 1970 it was used to resettle Vietnamese refugees fleeing from the oppressive regime in their country.

I was overwhelmed with the haunted feeling around the site and dread to think what occurred in these camps.  On a happier note, the location is perfect for my planned shoot and I can't wait to revisit with a 5x4 camera, a vietnamese model, a baby and an assistant in a few weeks time. Pictures to follow!

Have you discovered any interesting locations recently?

Cutting and Sticking

Today I spent my whole day cutting and sticking images from artists work into my sketchbook.  There's something so therapeutic about this.  Guillotine at the ready.  iTunes on full blast.

A slightly less therapeutic thought is that I now have to fill the spaces i've created in between each photo with a load of blabber.  As much as I love these artists, there comes a point where i'd much rather just talk to a person/camera about my love for their images.  I therefore would skip the whole 'I actually cannot feel my wrist anymore' dilemma.

This looks more like a tweet than a blog post.  But still, thought it was necessary.

A Few Cheeky Exhibitions

There are many fantastic Photography Exhibitions occurring in London currently.  Myself and a few pals, therefore took the opportunity to venture into the cosmopolitan world of beautiful buildings, town houses and aggressive drivers.

I went to three small exhibitions.  All of which i'd never been to before.  Alongside my terrible sense of direction and the pouring rain it was therefore quite the challenge to find these photography hideouts.  Nonetheless, we eventually arrived and by the time I had stepped out those tall glass doors, I was buzzing with inspiration.

(Apologies for the photos.  I decided to give my little shoulder a break from carrying around my heavy camera.  Plus my iPhone was feeling neglected.)

1. Corrine Day
May the circle remain unbroken
Gimpel Fils

'This exhibition shows the people that Corinne's work brought together and the friendships that formed over 20 years ago and continue to endure three years after her passing.'

This exhibition gave me goosebumps.  I think this was purely because of the emotion in the photographs, that were previously unseen pieces of her early work.  I love her grunge style and I believe so many artists that follow this style will always remember her early work, to aspire to.

2. Richard Avedon
Women
Gagosion Gallery

'I have worked of out a series of nos.  No to exquisite light, no to apparent compositions, no to the seduction of poses and narrative.  And all these nos forced me to a 'yes'.  I have a white background, I have the person i'm interested in, and the thing that happens between us.' - Richard Avedon

This exhibition was spectacular.  I have always thought that images taken before 1990 would never be my thing.  Oh boy I was wrong.  The glamour and fashion that we see today in 'Vogue' or similar was staring me in the face...and it was made in the 70s.  I loved how the black and white complimented the figures.

3. PUNK by Nick Knight
Showstudio

I have never been to an exhibition that was of numerous artists, picked out by one artist.  Frankly, I loved this idea.  Not to mention the artist was NICK KNIGHT... I more than loved this idea.  The ShowStudio was filled with prints, sketchbooks, artists props and creations and books to purchase.  Heaven.

I did manage to fall in love with an artist called 'Judy Blame'.  He is a stylist, jeweller, designer and art director.  Again, not usually the type of artist I would spot first at a 'photography' exhibition.  I was glued to his sketchbooks for a good half hour and wanted to take them home with me. Sad times.

After a casual trip to Wagamama's to eat and ring our clothes out we stumbled across this bit of fine ass.     If you hadn't already guessed I'm Rankin's biggest fan and have to admit I did have a bit of a 'fangirl' moment when this jumped out at us.

Excuses

Evidence of my Film Camera Usage.

So a couple of weeks ago I decided to give blogging a proper go.  I loved editing my pictures and writing about my trip away.  It was then I made a promise to myself to keep at it.

I posted that over a week and a half a go. Uh Oh Mollie!

My Excuses:

I've just started Uni
I am already panicking about running out of time to finish my projects that are in for January...
Every single image I have created so far at uni has been on 35mm film

Freshers
I am currently experiencing 'Photographers Block'

I have been editing my video to go with my next 'planned' blog for about 57 hours and counting
Everytime I get round to writing a post I always seem to need to go eat food or get ready for work (like now)

This tinker keeps putting fake spiders in my drawers and behind my door....

I think every blogger will agree that its never easy when you first start out, especially with barely any followers or comments.  However, I am determined to share my photography life on here!  This is therefore a promise to myself in writing that I will blog more often.

I went to a few photography exhibitions in London a few days ago.  Pictures coming soon!

What helps you keep on top of your blog?

Bath; A Beautiful City

Yesterday my boyfriend and I ventured into the beautiful city of Bath.  In my current state of 'Wanderlust' I am always longing to visit (or in this case revisit) new places, even if they are only a couple of hours from home.  I love how somewhere that seems worlds away from my home can sometimes be only an hours drive away.
We explored the courtyards and cute walkways, the cathedral and the roman baths and of course had a quick mooch around the shops.  The atmosphere reminded me of a more peaceful covent garden, with street entertainers and acoustic singers around every corner.

(nice out of focus shot there Matt!)

What satisfies your wanderlust?
